A month from today, new duo Modern Rites will unleash their first offering, «Monuments». The band is formed by Jonny Warren of Kuyashii and Berg of Aaara and practices a sound that , as the album’s press release states, is “industrial-rooted, melodic black metal.” Their story dates back to 2020 when “in mutual respect for the other’s craft, the pair started trading tracks across borders with the goal of creating a unique sound which would transcend cultural barriers.” Of the eight tracks that comprise «Monuments», the fifth, titled «Self Synthesis» has been revealed (see below) and exemplifies what the press release goes on to carefully describe as a sound anchored in “Jonny’s heavily distorted bass sound inspired by dark industrial music of the early ’90s: the diverging, stereo bass-paths create a desolate landscape in which Berg’s guitars open portals into dark atmospheres with crushing riffs, anthemic tremolo leads and diverse textural work. Lyrically this set of meticulously-crafted songs explore the bleaker aspects of the human condition, diving into psychology, isolation, conflict, and the ever-evolving shadow self.”
«Monuments» is set for release on August 27 through Debemur Morti on cd, digital, and vinyl formats, whose pre-orders can be found here. The album was written and recorded by the band, with Joseph Calleiro handling mixing, mastering, additional editing, and sampling duties. The artwork, seen above, was created by Jonny Warren.
