Dutch composer Rutger Zuydervelt, about whom we wrote earlier due DNMF‘s «Smelter», has announced the release of a rather interesting-sounding record under his Machinefabriek alias. The first paragraph of its press release is one of those rare cases where every bit of information is relevant, so we might as well just quote it, lest we inevitably paraphrase the entire thing anyway.
With Voices is the newest recording by Dutch composer Rutger Zuydervelt under the moniker Machinefabriek. True to its title, the album’s eight pieces exhibit Zuydervelt’s use of cassette recorders, tone generators, radios, synths, and other hifi curio to construct bewildering aural architecture around vocal work from Peter Broderick, Marissa Nadler, Richard Youngs, Chantal Acda, Terence Hannum (of Locrian) and others. These human voices are featured as musical instruments rather than mere vehicles of lyrical content, resulting in a sub-linguistic mosaic of primordially stirring moods.
Each vocalist recorded a reaction to the same base track. Their parts became the starting points for the pieces on this album.
The record is set to start with Terence Hannum and finish with Marissa Nadler. It’s third song, featuring Peter Broderick, and entitled «III», can be heard below.
«With Voices» is set for release by Western Vinyl and distributed by Secretly Distribution on January 18, 2019. The cover drawing, as seen above, was done by Lennox Westphal, whilst mastering duties befell Ian Hawgood. Pre-orders of its cd, digital, and vinyl editions can be made at this location.
